PATTERNS OF WINDOW COVERINGS FASCINATE HONEYMOONERS

March 9th, 2008

Tom and Linda had decided to spend their honeymoon in New York – their new house in a Midwestern town was comfortable and definitely homey, but they were wanting to acquire a smattering of city sophistication as they began life together. They planned trips to the Metropolitan opera, some art galleries, even some small ones in Greenwich Village. But for their first full evening in town they decided to go for a stroll down a street at the residential area. “Just to see how the natives live in this concrete jungle!” Tom joked. It had been an October wedding and it was already getting dark. Linda went to the window to close the window covering before leaving. “Wow! These are not just plain old roller shades,” she shrieked,”Look at the fabric of these shades! It’s soft and elegant looking! These roller shades are remote controlled, too, just watch this!” She retried a small remote control and demonstrated.

“OK, OK – let’s get outa here and see how the city folks live!” Tom was getting impatient. The taxi dropped them off in what the driver told them was a typical middle class residential area, not without warning them to hang on to their wallets. All of a sudden these two children of the American Midwest felt alone, unprotected, and just a little spooked. “This feels like being at the bottom of a canyon, but it’s alive! Tom breathed. They were surrounded by tall buildings – so many floors high they got tired of counting them. Linda was suddenly quiet and seemed preoccupied. She was looking up at the buildings that surrounded them with a strange look on her face. “Look at these windows, they form a pattern!” Lights were blinking on here and there as apartment dwellers turned on their lights for the evening. It was like a pattern of lights on a huge checkerboard. But what was fascinating Linda was that the squares of light were not just bright squares, many of them had patterns, lines, like vertical lines, horizontal lines and half squares. She saw that it was the window coverings that were causing the patterns. She could pick out the type of blinds – there were some wooden blinds, she could tell by the wider louvers that cast a shadow that was solid. Some of the wooden blinds were closed all the way and left just a hint of a slit between the louvers, but others were only partially closed and she could see the white of ceilings through the openings. She could also pick out the faux wood blinds by the smoother shadow they cast although her practiced eye caught this better than Tom did. The windows that were covered with vertical blinds cast a different silhouette, featuring vertical dark and light stripes of various widths.

As the light of window after window clicked on they were fascinated to watch the patterns they cast. Some of the roller shades were only partially pulled, leaving a scattering of squares and oblong of light shining among the other lights. It was also easy to pick out the roller shades that were made with sheer fabrics, they shone only partially, and Linda reflected that if they were on a stand-alone house they would be partially transparent, and give only partial privacy. But they would be a super way to shut out the hard rays of summer without darkening a room and shutting off the light completely.

By now Linda was jazzed. “I never thought that New York would be a way to find out so much about window coverings,” she mused. “First thing when I get home is look up some websites like Hunter Douglas and see what I can find that will give our little place big pizzazz!” But out loud, she said, “OK, now on to see Aida! We for sure aren’t going to wins up in a dark cave like those newlyweds! “

Dress Up Games

February 22nd, 2008

Dressing up is a game played by children as well as adults. In the make believe world, the child pretends to be what she isn’t. She may try on mommy’s make up, trod precariously on her over-sized high heels and carry her designer handbag. It’s a game that can obsess the child for hours.

The online dress up game is not confined to real life only. It has also swamped the Internet and young girls spend long hours dressing up their favorite dolls. Parents might worry that this kind of game contains unhealthy, even sinister motives and may try to discourage or even prevent the child from playing the dress up games. However, they should encourage rather than discourage because the activity helps to boost the child’s imagination and creativity. Dress up games are equally intense for teens. Teenage girls, especially, like to dress up to look like their favorite pop idol or movie star. They wear the same designer clothes, the same hairstyle and color and might even take a trip to the plastic surgeon in order to help them look more like their favorite star. If you don’t believe me, look around how many people at the look alike Michael Jacksons, Elvis Presleys or the Marilyn Monroes.

Picture a girl dolling up for a date she wishes to impress. Her bedroom probably would look like it has been hit by a tornado. Jeans, dresses, tops, lingerie, shoes and accessories are strewn everywhere. She’s tried them all but still she has not found the right fit that would bowl him over. She probably would have been trying on different pants, skirts and tops long hours before the pick up time. Doesn’t it sound familiar? The mother probably had been in the same shoes when she was a young woman. So, don’t be anxious. It’s part of a growing up phase.

Thanks to the many sites on dress up games, the selection of clothes can be made faster and easier. After all, seeing is believing. Just keep dressing the doll until it looks like a knock out. That’s when you know, you’ve made the right dress choice. It a lot of fun, really. I just played one such game where I had to dress a doll with top, skirt or pants, shoes as well as accessories just by selecting, dragging and dropping the item on the doll. By the way, there are dress up games to cater to different seasons as well as occasions such as birthdays, weddings or office. Poking fun at political icons has also hit the dressing up sites. And the latest victim is none other than Hilary Clinton. Not bad, eh to have a go at dressing up the former First Lady and prospective first female president. How do you want her to look like? Chic, elegant? Hard, officious? Or do you visualize her as the girl next door? Remember, you can dress her the way you like since you are the potter and she’s the clay.

Mayors Job

February 8th, 2008

Garbage dump of our cities.jpg. The picture is from en.wikipedia.org If you live in a city, you might be forgiven to think that it is the duty of the administration to provide recycle bins . And most cities’ authorities do a good job on that. But most people think that cities generally perform a dismal job making their cities have that welcoming feel, one that feels like it’s meant for humans, not concrete behemoths skyscrapers and money-minded capitalists. And talking of concrete, wouldn’t a momentary park complete with concrete tables cool? Sadly for many, providing things like concrete furniture is not a cup of tea for many city administration officials. It is not a priority most of the times. Almost all cities in the world are run by as local authorities, or entities that are derivatives of these, with varying degree of autonomy. And most officials who head these entities are usually elected officials, at least in the democracies of the Western world. One of the more pressing issues that face major cities today is environmental accountability. It helps an aspiring official to put out his/her credentials as the more “green” candidate, promising to install more recycle bins, and defend the encroachment of public parks from developers, and put more environmental friendly concrete tables and other furniture whose make up is at least not unfriendly to the environment. Most of these officials conveniently forget, or are overwhelmed by other issues once they are elected.

Leisure activities take a back seat in such cities, and so does some cleanliness. Whereas recycling reusable materials could be a prudent solid waste management strategy, these are seen as time consuming and rather expensive. But of course, they will always be expensive when done using public funds. The best way is to leave it to the private sector, but perhaps the local authority in question may help in collecting waste and placing recycle bins at strategic points from where they can be collected by the designated private sector players. In the city where the author lives it is common for a charity or a well to do individual to donate a recycle bin (with the name of the organization or individual prominently printed on the side) and which is then placed on the street by the local authorities. There is a sense of the need to promote environmental health among individuals and civilians than among the authorities which collect tax for exactly the same purpose. Distributing or donation of a recycle bin is hardly enough, but some sort of civic education about how these recycle bins should be used not just as a way to contain filth, but also diseases and vermin.

Does your city make you feel like an outsider when walking in it? Some cities could feel hostile to a visitor because there are no public amenities that can be accessed by all the people as of right. In some cities there are few of no public washrooms, no planters but all concrete jungle, few operating telephone booths and motorists who drive vehicles with more elan than sense so as to make it almost suicidal to cross the road without being extra careful. And the available parks and public concrete chairs are the preserve of street urchins. Concrete furniture especially is desirable when resting in a park, for they are enduring and cannot possibly be destroyed by normal weather; at least in the short term concrete tables would be very helpful during outdoor seating event, like a picnic.
