The Florida Keys: A Fishing Vacation Hideaway
The Florida Keys are full of sightseeing locations, from Key West to the Lower Keys. For example, you can take a tour train to learn about the legends of Key West, or listen to a guide tell you about the colorful ghosts that have taken up residence in Old Town. In Marathon you can visit Pigeon Key, an encampment for railroad workers who constructed the world famous Seven Mile Bridge.
For a new type of sightseeing, Islamorada offers a ride in the NautiLimo. With sunset and dinner cruise packages, you can cruise the Florida Bay in a nautical stretch limo captained by your chauffeur, watching as the sun sets over the waters. Keys boat rentals is a thing in itself also…
However, most people are pulled to the Florida Keys because of their love of fishing. Many of the tropical vacation suites offer, not only glorious views of the water from your balcony, but the use of a 19- to 21- foot Guest Boat. These boats can be taken out into the blue waters of the Keys with a depth/fish finder, a handy swim step and a handheld GPS – all to chase down the best catch of Snook, Tarpon, Snapper or Shark possible.
For those that would like a specific type of boat or strength of motor, a 225 HP Yamaha four stroke, for instance, there are boat rentals in Marathon and many other places in the Keys. There are even guided tours through the flats of Florida Bay for backcountry fishing, using a specialized, 16– to 20– foot long skiff with a shallow draft.
If Snook, Tarpon and Snapper from the backcountry are a little too tame for you, you can always try the Florida Keys fishing charters. These charters can take you to any type of fishing you enjoy: offshore for some deep sea fishing to catch marlin, sailfish, swordfish and kingfish, or reef fishing for shark, mackerel and barracuda.
Perhaps you don’t care for fishing, but love the taste of fresh catch seafood. Restaurants throughout the Florida Keys offer “Catch of the Day” menus, giving you the chance to expand your culinary experience and pallet with mahi-mahi, yellowtail, snapper and grouper. From October to May, you can tantalize your tongue with stone crab claws, fresh Florida lobster or Key West pink shrimp.
At the end of a long day, once you’ve toured, fished, snorkeled and dined your way to exhaustion, you can relax in one of the many hotels or resorts that offer tropical vacation suites. These suites have bedrooms, a living room and a fully functional kitchen, as well as a gorgeous view of the glassy turquoise waters of the Florida Bay.
Though there are many different vacation spots around the country, there aren’t many that can rival the fishing, and beauty, of the Florida Keys – your fishing vacation hideaway.
